15 fun and educational activities for preschoolers at home

Learning doesn't stop at the school gate. These 15 activities need little more than household items and 10 to 20 minutes of your time. They support what your child does at preschool and make for happy time together.

Language and early reading

  1. Alphabet treasure hunt. Hide letter cards around the room. Each time your child finds one, say the sound and think of a word that starts with it.
  2. Storytelling time. Read a picture book together, then ask "What happened next?" or "How did the rabbit feel?"
  3. Role-play games. Play shop, doctor or teacher. Children practise new words and take turns speaking.
  4. Rhymes and songs. Sing rhymes in Hindi and English. Rhythm and rhyme build listening skills that help with reading later.

Numbers and thinking

  1. Counting with everyday objects. Count spoons while setting the table, or steps on the stairs.
  2. Shape sorting. Find circles, squares and triangles around the house: rotis, windows, samosas.
  3. Colour hunt. "Find three red things!" Then try blue, then yellow.
  4. Puzzles. Start with 4 to 6 large pieces and build up.
  5. Memory card game. Place matching picture cards face down and take turns finding pairs.
  6. Simple science. Guess which things float or sink in a bucket of water, then test them.

Creativity and motor skills

  1. Art and craft. Tearing and pasting paper, finger painting and colouring strengthen little hands for writing.
  2. Clay or dough modelling. Make atta dough and shape fruits, animals or letters.
  3. Building blocks. Build the tallest tower you can, then count the blocks.
  4. Music and dance. Dance fast and slow, freeze when the music stops. It is good for balance and listening.

Feelings and the world around us

  1. Nature walk and feelings chart. Walk to a nearby park or ghat and name the trees, birds and sounds you notice. At home, draw happy, sad and angry faces and talk about when your child feels each one.

Tips for making it work

  • Keep it short and stop while your child is still enjoying it.
  • Follow your child's interest. If they love cars, count cars.
  • Praise effort, not only the result.
  • Limit screen time and choose hands-on play whenever you can.

These activities build language, thinking, creativity and motor skills, the same skills our teachers focus on at Kidzee Ramnagar. Ask your child's teacher what the class is learning this week so you can play along at home.
