Your child's first school is a big decision. With several preschools in and around Ramnagar, it helps to compare them on the things that really matter. Use this checklist on your school visits.
1. Safety and security
- Is entry and exit controlled, with children handed over only to known adults?
- Are there CCTV cameras in common areas?
- Are furniture, stairs and play equipment child-safe?
- Is there a first-aid kit, and are staff trained to use it?
2. Curriculum and teaching style
Look for play-based learning rather than rote memorisation. Young children learn best by doing: building, drawing, singing, sorting and talking. Ask to see a sample week of activities. Read more in what play-based learning is and why it matters.
3. Teachers
- Are teachers trained in early childhood education?
- How do they speak to children? Watch for warmth and patience.
- How do they handle a crying or upset child?
4. Class size and attention
Smaller groups mean more individual attention. Ask how many children are in a class and whether there is a helper (didi or ayah) alongside the teacher for the youngest groups.
5. Hygiene
- Clean, child-sized toilets and hand-washing areas
- Toys and surfaces cleaned regularly
- Airy, well-lit classrooms
- Drinking water that is safe and easy to reach
6. Communication with parents
Regular updates, parent-teacher meetings (PTMs) and a quick way to reach the school, such as WhatsApp, make a big difference. Ask how and how often you'll hear about your child's progress.
7. Continuity after KG
Some families prefer a school where children can continue after Senior KG without changing campus. It avoids a second round of admissions and keeps your child with familiar teachers and friends.
8. Location and timings
A school close to home means shorter journeys and easier pick-ups. Check the school hours against your work routine, and ask about the arrangements for pick-up and drop-off.
Questions to ask on your visit
- What does a normal day look like for my child's class?
- How do you help new children settle in?
- How do you track and share progress?
- What activities happen beyond the classroom?
- What are the fees, and what do they include?
Tip: Always visit in person, ideally with your child. How your child reacts to the space and the teachers tells you a lot.
